The basic setup for What If…? is just as salacious as one might expect from Jordan Marie, well known back in the day for helping us all to objectify Taylor via her website. The story posits a deceptively simple hypothetical scenario. What if the Hanson brothers swap girlfriends?
In just twenty-four short installments, we find out exactly what would happen. Although the chapters are short, so is the action–it takes several installments for any of them to move past flirtation and actually act upon what they believe they have all agreed to. Sadly, some of the more explicit and explosive chapters haven’t been archived, but Jordan Marie provides enough context that it’s easy enough to fill in the blanks.
In the end, things only work out well for one of the three couples, which isn’t really surprising at all. While it was brave of Jordan Marie to go with a bittersweet ending, I would have expected and appreciated a lot more smut along the way. Her chapters are short and her dialogue is sometimes rather stilted, sounding nothing at all like how people really talk. What If…? is itself something of a question mark, having a lot of unfulfilled potential, but it still stands out from the crowd as a rather adult (in plot, if not in detail) story for the time.
