Do you ever read a story and find yourself wanting to like it more than you really do? That is, unfortunately, how I find myself feeling about Star Crossed. That shouldn’t be surprising; a plot that involves two young journalists being sent on assignment to spend the summer with Hanson isn’t all that impressive of a setup.
There are interesting things Monroe could have done with a setup like that, though. She loses points immediately after introducing the young and bratty acting girls we are supposed to believe are well respected journalists for Rolling Stone. Aging Hanson up a few years to match the ages of more mature journalists would have been a great improvement, especially since Hanson themselves are rather immature acting in this story.
It’s no surprise that the two so-called journalists, Morgan and Laura, almost immediately hook up with Zac and Taylor. Monroe does manage to throw in one nice surprise concerning Taylor’s very recent ex-girlfriend who has since hooked up with Ike, though. Unfortunately she’s a cardboard cut-out of a bitchy California girl and there’s nothing at all to convince me Ike even believes his feelings for her are real.
As the story goes on, the other two couples become more and more believable, although whether or not one of them is a couple is still up for debate. Unfortunately, Ike’s character and the girls’ incompetence at their jobs eclipse the good things about Star Crossed. I’m confident Monroe could have pulled off a happy ending for it, but it’s hard to recommend it in its unfinished state.
