It’s no secret that I’m a big fangirl of one of Ivey’s later fics, but her earlier works tend to leave me a bit cold. Office Hours is a nice bridge between the two, her love of New York City obvious without being completely obnoxious, her Zac engaging and her smut hot, hot, hot.
If you have a problem with Hansons who are almost nothing like their real selves, you might want to skip this fic. But if you like the idea of smart, sarcastic and seductive pre-law student Zac… read on. I promise you won’t be disappointed. He can come across a bit hot and cold, his nerdy side somewhat at odds with his sexual side. On the other hand, flirtation in the library via Dewey Decimal coded notes is exactly up my alley.
There is an actual plot beneath all the sexuality here, I promise. Zac and his professorial lover, Mallory, naturally struggle with their attraction to each other and the need to hide their affair from both the college and Mallory’s long term boyfriend. It’s pretty obvious that they will get their happy ending eventually, but the push and pull that leads up to that ending is still engaging enough to keep me on the edge of my seat.
Although Ivey’s writing is occasionally amateurish, it’s clear that she has been the stronger writer in any of her collaborations. She isn’t quite as polished here as she would prove to be later, but Office Hours is nonetheless a great read for those who like their chicklit especially steamy.
