What Didn’t Happen is a rarity in the Hanfic world in that it deals with time travel which is probably one of the reasons I read it. That and it’s by one of my favorite authors who are currently still writing hanfics.
I wasn’t disappointed either. Bethany handled the time travel aspect well with Zac waking up in a new world very different from the world he was in before. In the new world Kate has left him and Taylor is dead and Zac feels like everything is wrong because of those two aspects. The two people he loves the most are gone from his life and he can’t get them back…or can he?
I think the main aspect I loved about Zac’s new world was his little interactions with Isaac because they were kind of sweet in a weird way. I also loved how this Zac broke the fourth wall at times.
Of course though Zac gets back to his old life and in part it is because of the song Georgia and I kind of like how well Bethany sewed that song into the story’s structure.
But of course even in his old world Taylor is still alive but really not there so the latter part of the story is just a back and forth between Zac/Taylor as well as Zac adapting to being home after being in the hospital in a coma for a few months and of course he equates his time travel to coma dreams though I tend to think Zac really did time travel but luckily Bethany always leaves that up to reader interpretation.
It ends sort of nicely but I do wish Bethany had kept the Isaac and Zac interactions up after he had woken up and I kind of wish she had used Kate more because Kate was shockingly one of my favorites and besides the Zac and Taylor relationship I was also rooting for Zac and Kate too.
Other than those two faults I think the story was done really well for a time travel fic which in all honesty has to be hard to write in and of itself.
