The first story in this series, now a trilogy, took me by surprise. Although it began in the early days of Hanson and threatened to be no better than most fics from that era, Amy’s writing was strong enough to overcome the cliche plot. This second story in the series, Shattered, is set firmly in the present day and while it doesn’t cover a ton of ground, it does it all just as well as the first.
Shattered picks up right after the end of Broken, with the truth coming out and Amelia having the choice between Taylor and Jeremy taken away from her. Soon, it becomes clear that being with Taylor isn’t a viable choice either–between his drinking problem and issues with his soon-to-be ex-wife, he’s in no place to be with Amelia right then. Everyone around them can see that they are meant to be together, though, which could be annoying, but they’re all well written characters who (especially Zac) provide great banter and comic relief.
It’s no surprise that Taylor and Amelia do finally find their way back to each other, but I appreciate that Amy doesn’t rush their tentative new beginning. In fact, they have only just begun when a curve ball comes out of nowhere… and the story ends. With such a big cliffhanger, it’s no surprise that a third story follows, and my mind is positively racing with all the possibilities, many of which I hope are wrong. This is a quick read, with a few nagging typos, but the story is strong enough to leave me on the edge of my seat.
