So I must say I love stories set in another era than the current era that is actually happening and I think that may be one of the many reasons I read Cricket. It’s set in the 70’s and I just love that.

Like hello I am an old soul I believe who probably should have been born into another era so I semi connect more with fics set in one.

But what I love about Cricket is despite being set in the 70’s you couldn’t really tell it much without finding little clues that KT references every so often that I think are things that would have been prominent about that time. Like Ouija boards and diners and restaurants being more popular hang out spots for teens then they are now days.

Cricket is much more than the era it’s set in though. It’s the story of Christine Hanson aka Cricket an OFC Hanson sister who has a coming of age summer after a big event at a party.

By big event I mean she was raped and I’m going to be honest majority of the time I don’t like rape in fanfic because authors don’t know how to write it well or handle it well. KT though did a really good job with how she handled the rape and the aftermath of it all.

It didn’t feel like someone who was writing it just to put it in for shock value and knew nothing about how people cope with that. Cricket’s emotions after all felt very real and at times they literally made me tear up.

But the rape wasn’t the only big event. There was another that again was all part of the aftermath of the rape and again it was another thing that HarperJean handled well and it was another thing I’m not usually that fond of much in fics which is a Hanson dying.

Again though KT did magnificent in handling how Cricket, Zac, and Isaac coped after the loss of Taylor and again there were times that I literally did cry. Just like there were times after when I sometimes disagreed with Cricket’s coping mechanism and how she forgot she wasn’t the only one who was missing Taylor.

That Taylor impacted more than just her.

It’s always good in my opinion when a main character can evoke more than just an oh I love this character moments. I find my favorite characters are also ones I can get extremely mad at times too because it proves they have a certain depth to them that sometimes is hard to come by in fic.

I’d personally recommend this story especially since it’s one of the few gems that isn’t centered on a romance. It’s only centered on a girl growing up in so many ways during one eventful summer.
