Now that we’ve made it to the halfway point, the Kindred series takes a major turn that leaves me wondering if what I thought I knew about it was true at all. What if the real bad guys aren’t the cloning lab at all? What if there are worse people out there?

Part of the mystery comes from the inclusion of Russian text. I stuck some of it into Google’s translate feature, but none of it seemed to be anything siginifcally more than what one could have guessed was being said in that moment. It certainly makes the fic feel more mysterious, though. The fact that Keandre knows some Russian–and the other actions he takes while imprisoned by them–raise a few more questions, too.

In the end, though, it’s Jesse to the rescue once again, even though it means sacrificing himself to save the rest of the clones. After everything else he has done, and what has been done to him, he’s clearly broken–which is saying something, given the obvious PTSD he has been suffering frm through the entire fic. Now that things have hit rock bottom, though, he can’t even operate on auto-pilot the way he has been, and that’s saying a lot.

As I’ve come to expect from the Kindred series, this installment raises even more questions and answers very few of them. I’m starting to relate to Taylor, when he says he feels like he’s on a hamster wheel. That’s not a complaint, necessarily.
