I was anxious to read this story and see how Taylor and Ellie’s relationship could possibly be revived after the ending of BWU. Even though it takes place five years later, it’s like no time at all has passed when they meet again.
There isn’t a great deal of explanation as to what has happened in that time, and neither of them seem to have changed much. Taylor is still unable to free himself from Natalie, despite the fact that she reveals herself to be a rather despicable person in this installment. I think Sarah was onto something really interesting with just how codependent and damaging their relationship is, with both of them being rather awful people, but it was never explored quite as much as I would have hoped.
In the end, Fix You Up just circles around the same issues as the first story. It tries to explore the stigma around Hanson, but as someone who has heard the same old jokes for twenty years, it’s really not entertaining to me to read them in a fic. I think Sarah, as a young fan, brings an interesting perspective to the fandom that I would really like to see explored in even more detail than this series does.
