Rust is a story I started reading mainly because it’s the only fic of Brittney’s on ao3 and I’m a slut for more Hanfics on ao3 lolz. I also wish I were joking with that last statement but I’m not.
It’s a story I liked at least in some aspects anyway. I liked the gist of the band having fallen apart after the release of Underneath on a major label, something that didn’t happen in real life thanks to their label being assholes and not allowing them to do what they wanted and a part of that was in the fic. Though in the end in this fic the label let them release the album and it tanked and Hanson were released from the label.
That element was a nice what if as was the struggles all three brother’s faced and this story was very a much a story about all three brothers with each getting three chapters in their point of view and the last one being one with all of their point of views.
That too was something I liked as well.
What I really wasn’t a fan of is at times none of the boys were rather likeable. Isaac may have been the best at being likeable but Taylor and Zac just came across as shallow sometimes. Especially when it came to how they viewed the females in their lives.
Taylor who was an addict and now clean harshly judging Adalyn who seemed to be written with a certain stereotype of addicts and not everyone fits that stereotype. While Zac was married to Lara whom he had a one night stand with and gotten pregnant, Lara now suffering from postpartum depression.
Yet Lara’s postpartum depression seemed to be written at times to make her sound like a villain though she’s not and with Adalyn and Lara I can’t help but wonder if that’s how the writer really feels.
I don’t think it is but still it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Isaac’s wife gets the easier end of the stick. All she does is cheat on him which is what ends their marriage and she is just swiftly written out then.
But I guess in ways Brittney had to ruin all the boys relationships or respective ones to get them to the point where they could reconnect and get the band back together figuratively. But I just wish she hadn’t had to demonize two of the original female characters to do that.
Despite that though I still think this story was an interesting read of what could have happened. I also wish it had been longer than ten chapters.
