Tiny Dancer

by Cate (link)

Genre drama, romance
Pairings Taylor/OFC, Zac/OFC
Length prologue and 12 chapters
Status Unfinished

It was a common thing, in the early days, for fans to write stories set in the future, but I think Tiny Dancer takes a unique spin on that. The story is actually narrated by Zac’s future daughter, who as you might guess by the title is a dancer. It’s a neat way for Cate to work in something she was personally familiar with, while also creating a unique and well-built world for her characters.

The chapters are on the short side and her sentences are a bit short and choppy at times, too, but I like the way Cate describes things. She definitely paints a picture that I can see clearly, even though I know nothing about ballet. The plot takes a little while to get going, but in the meantime, I can definitely enjoy the worldbuilding.

Once the plot does get going, it’s a pretty interesting and different idea. The concept of Hanson as a “stage family” is one that crops up from time to time in fic, but I can’t recall reading another story that applies that idea to the next generation. The major conflict here is between Zac’s daughter and her mother, and whether or not said daughter wants to pursue a career in the arts as well. I find it interesting, but the story revolves so much around the original characters that I can imagine it wouldn’t appeal to a lot of people. Still, Tiny Dancer is a nicely written, unique and interesting story, with the biggest flaw being that it remains unfinished.
