In many fandoms, using real life tragedies as story fodder is frowned on. This story, like a few other hanfics I’ve encountered, incorporates 9/11 as a plot point. I have somewhat mixed emotions about that, but I convinced myself to see the story through before making up my mind.
The first few chapters covered several years, incorporating not just that real life tragedy but real life events in Hanson’s lives as well. Taylor’s reunion with his long lost girlfriend Raven is contrived and rather unbelievable; she just so happens to be a Jane Doe in a catatonic state in the hospital where Isaac is taken the night of his blood clot. What a coincidence, huh?
That dramatic introduction sets the stage for a lot of, well, drama. It turns out that Raven was pregnant when she and Taylor parted ways, and Zac just so happened to have a crush on her as well. A lot of the drama progresses very quickly — some of it impossibly so — and seems to get resolved way too soon.
I think the biggest problem with this story, aside from the rather unpolished writing, is that it just tries to do too much. On their own, several of the various plot lines could make for interesting stories. Throw them all together and try to resolve them in twenty five chapters and it’s just too much. Nothing has time to build up the emotional intensity it deserves, and I never really even begin to care about the characters. That sort of apathy is definitely not a feeling I like to end a story with. There was supposed to be a sequel, which I can find no trace of, but I don’t think I would have had any interest in reading it anyway.
