This is not your typical story. How many times will you actually see the genre “femmeslash” crop up in hanfic, after all? That’s not a typo, and it’s not minor characters, either; in Twelve Stops And Home, Taylor is actually a woman. If that’s not your thing, that’s cool. I found it unique enough, along with the inclusion of vampires and werewolves, to give the story a read.

Written for The Spark Inside, the story had to include several different prompts. It begins with a wedding, fulfilling that prompt, and also providing a fair amount of background on the story’s universe. It’s a good way of incorporating a part of the challenge and giving your readers some necessary exposition. With the story being fairly short, it’s necessary for Aeryn to make the plot as compact as possible for it to work, and she has. The story switches back and forth between Sadie and Taylor’s points of view, giving both the insider perspective of the hunter world and the civilian’s — a pretty effective way of structuring it.

I think Aeryn’s strength lies in her worldbuilding; her stories rarely come even remotely close to resembling the Hanson world as we know it, but that’s okay. At least, it’s okay by me. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you’re into stories about vampires, werewolves and the like, I think Twelve Stops And Home would be right up your alley, so long as you don’t go into it expecting a story that’s really about Hanson the band at all.
