Becca is a pretty prolific author, and while I’ve read several of her newer stories, she has a large back catalog that I haven’t worked through yet. Someone Special is one of those earlier stories.
The first chapter of Someone Special follows right along with the summary, which is a little boring. It feels like rehashing what I already know just from reading the summary. I suppose not everyone reads summaries, but it still feels like a boring way to start. The dialogue is fairly stilted, too, and the writing sparse enough that I just don’t get much of a feel for the characters, aside from what exposition Becca’s worked into the dialogue.
The chapters aren’t long, and neither is the story, so the plot has to get moving quickly. I wasn’t surprised to see Zac and Joelle in bed together early on, nor was I surprised by the “twist” that followed shortly after. Large portions of their relationship are glossed over to move the plot to that point, and I wouldn’t have minded seeing the story fleshed out more.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with the plot of this story, but I think Becca could have taken a lot more time to tell the story, rather than rush through months at a time in the same chapter. A slower pace and more careful editing would have made this a much better story.
