I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; it’s hard to tell a complete story in a single digit amount of chapters. It certainly can be done, but I tend to judge shorter stories more harshly because they have less time to achieve the same amount of impact as a longer story. Whether Amy C. pulls it off with Forgiveness is yet to be seen.
The prologue is fairly lengthy, and says a lot — but what it leaves unsaid (such as the exact reason why Zac hasn’t spoken to Taylor for three years) is what piques my interest. Oddly, the first chapter is quite a bit shorter. It skips back in time to tell the story of exactly what it was that drove a wedge between Zac and Taylor — a girl, apparently.
It’s a little more nuanced than that, though. The story progresses quickly, so the full emotional impact of it doesn’t quite hit me at first, but it’s still a better plot than just a simple love triangle. When the big twist hits, I had some inkling of what to expect, but it was still like a shot to the gut. I would still prefer the story, or at least a few of the chapters, to be a bit longer, and Amy C. could have used a little editing to fix a few shifts in tense, but overall Forgiveness accomplishes a lot for such a short story.
