The length of this story — seventy seven chapters — was a bit daunting to me, but the premise was unique enough to intrigue me. Perhaps naively, I hadn’t considered that a story about a mixed relationship would even be written these days, but obviously it is a topic that bears talking about. It’s interesting to read about that issue within the context of a hanfic.
The story alternates point of view with each chapter, which can be hard to pull off. Rebekah managed it perfectly, though; Zac and Hope both come across as their own distinct characters. Hope is sassy and sarcastic, and Zac is adorable and a little bit poetic. They compliment each other really well.
As I said, it was naive of me to think that racial issues didn’t bear talking about in a fic, especially since my family (being from a small, backwoods town) has had to face our prejudices in a couple different ways. Obviously what I’ve dealt with is different than what Hope and Zac face in this story, but I found myself able to relate to their problems and really feel for what they went through together.
My only complaint here is that the chapters are sometimes on the short side. That’s not really a complaint, per se — it just means I want more of this story to read! I’m definitely looking forward to the sequel Rebekah has mentioned.
