I’m always a bit wary of authors who have strange names for their chapters. What’s wrong with just calling them chapters or parts? As far as I can tell, the “phases” of Angels Would Fall are really just chapters, so I’m not sure why a different name was necessary.
Whatever Morgan calls them, she wastes no time getting right down to business in the first one. Although Michele immediately appears to have more chemistry with Zac, only paragraphs later we’re treated to a show of her sexual chemistry with Taylor. It’s a strange love triangle, and it takes a while for me to figure out the dynamics of it. As it turns out, Michele isn’t dating either of them — in the beginning.
The love triangle is a common plot in hanfics; I’ve read several that involve a girl cheating on Taylor with Zac, which is what I expect to happen in Angels Would Fall. It isn’t, though — not exactly. While I’m not sure what to make of the huge age difference between Zac and Michele — six years — I can see the connection they have. I wish Morgan had made a little more of that age difference, though.
In so many of these love triangle stories, the focus is on how much better of a person Zac is thank Taylor. That’s entirely absent from Angels Would Fall. Although Taylor doesn’t seem great at first, by the end, he understands perfectly the roles that he and Zac play in Michele’s life. While most of his character development occurs during the story’s numerous sex scenes, they are quite good scenes. The story ends bittersweetly and abruptly, but thankfully, there’s a sequel.
