I’ve said before that I think it’s difficult to tell and a complete and fulfilling story in so far chapters. Having no clue what Caution: Wreckage was about when I began reading it, I was curious to see if it succeeded.
The story has a unique, conversational sort of writing style that doesn’t annoy me as much as many other more informal styles do. It’s a fine line to walk, I think, between making a story sound like it’s being told to you over drinks with a friend and just making it sound like a juvenile mess. Luckily, Caution: Wreckage stays on the good side of that line.
Each chapter of this short story is named after a state — from Michigan to Oklahoma, on Layla’s trip back home with her best friend Taylor after a bad breakup. As you might expect from a story with such a quirky setup, there’s a healthy dose of humor in it. The characters are crude and silly, which others might not like, but which I enjoy and wish I could pull off in my own writing.
But beneath the silliness, there’s a love story happening as these two friends travel together. As Taylor helps Layla mend her broken heart, she realizes Taylor is the one she’s loved all along. I would gladly read chapters upon chapters of these two characters — and I do mean characters — but Caution: Wreckage functions wonderfully as a shorter story, too.
