I’m sure I’ve said it before, but Diamond is one of my favorite hanfic authors. When she started to dip her toes into the world of Zaylor, after years of only writing het, I couldn’t have been more thrilled. What resulted from that first experimentation — this story — wasn’t entirely Zaylor, but it was nevertheless a wonderful read.
Diamond’s specialty, if you ask me, is her ability to build suspense. Even though the first few chapters reveal the reason Zac has traveled to Philadelphia (to see Taylor perform with his new band), it’s obvious there’s still a lot left unsaid. The exact reason why Zac and Taylor have gone so long without speaking isn’t revealed at first, but it’s obvious there’s more beneath the surface than just lingering resentment about Taylor’s career choices.
While she claimed to be writing the story by the seat of her pants, I’m Not Your Anything seems to be full of all sorts of mysteries and mixed emotions that Diamond unravels beautifully. It’s not always a pleasant ride — in fact, it mostly isn’t — but that doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable to read. There were chapters that left me in agony, but that’s really just a sign of how attached to the characters I’d become.
Although most of the story belongs to Zac, Taylor and Trinity play a part in the narration as well. It’s all told in third person, with just a hint of sarcasm to temper the strong emotions that run through the story. While of course I had hopes of a Zaylor ending, things don’t quite work out that way. The complex emotions that all three of the characters feel are hard for me to even sum up in this review, except to say that I greatly enjoyed watching them unfold with each chapter.
