I first discovered this story when the author herself emailed me and said she’d been inspired by my story Little Deaths. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because that’s a very dark and… we’ll call it unique… story. While Addicted isn’t entirely similar, it does deal with some fairly dark and criminal elements.
While the prologue is a little heavy on information, it’s kind of necessary to set up the seedy underworld Chi has created. If you can suspend your disbelief at the idea of Isaac, Taylor and Zac as drug dealers and pimps, you’re in for quite a ride. That, plus the misogynistic way the boys treat their girlfriends, is a big stumbling block for me, but I still find myself fascinated by how detailed and likely accurate of a picture Chi paints of their world.
Addicted is the sort of story that’s full of horrible people doing horrible things, but somehow it still keeps me on the edge of my seat, hoping things work out for everyone involved. Do the characters always made good choices? Nope. Do I find myself wincing at some of the awful things they do? Yes. But I can appreciate the story anyway and enjoy the very unique and intense world of it. Pimps and drug dealers may not be all that common in hanfic, but if you can stomach that, you’ll find Addicted a short, fairly satisfying read with more than a few hot, steamy scenes to make the other stuff more palatable.
