When Fallen Down Angels ended, the shit had just hit the proverbial fan. I assume this sequel will deal with the fallout, since the first story’s ending was too abrupt for any of that to happen. I can only hope it isn’t just a rehashing of the first story.
The first few chapters recap what has happened in the five years since Fallen Down Angels, but without feeling like a big infodump. All that information is necessary and gets the story moving pretty quickly. Delaney is still the same old Delaney, not surprisingly, and I’m a little bit frustrated that she hasn’t learned anything from the many things in her life that have gone wrong. I suppose that’s what Truth of the Scars is for.
Or not. For most of the story, Delaney is completely oblivious to the harm she’s causing other people. I suppose that’s the first step in her breakdown, strangely enough. It seemed to be her entire purpose in Fallen Down Angels, but it isn’t until the last chapter, entirely off screen, that she ever develops a sense of remorse in Truth of the Scars.
Delaney aside, I think this story is better than its predecessor. I usually don’t care for stories that bring all the characters together through coincidences, but there’s something wonderful (in a trainwreck sort of way) about Delaney and Zac’s daughter being in Bailey’s kindergarten class. The whole story is sort of like watching a trainwreck, but it all works out to a happy ending, somehow.
