Drunk is one of those stories that I went into reading completely blind, as it were. I had no initial impression of it, aside from one friend having recommended it to me.
Immediately, I’m struck by the resemblance to Lived — a story written in second person about Zac. That left me with a nagging feeling that I knew how this one would end, too. There’s an awful sense of forboding through the first few chapters that lets you know something bad is coming, and it was almost enough to drive me to stop reading. Not because I wasn’t enjoying the story; quite the opposite, really. Sometimes, stories just get too emotional for me to handle, and I could see from the start that Drunk had that potential.
I can’t really even to describe everything that happens in this story. There are little hints that Zac and Faith are still together in the future, but obviously there’s some sort of drama that lies in between. I won’t spoil that for you, except to say that there’s a very good reason that she’s writing their story down to give to him.
And what beautiful writing it is, despite Nicky’s claim that she isn’t one for beautiful prose. I happen to think that she is. Every person in the story is described in beautiful detail, their personalities and tiny little quirks laid out so that they might as well be real to me. The story itself is absolutely heartbreaking, and it leaves me sitting here in tears as I type up this review. That said, despite the sadness, it’s definitely a story worth reading.
