I’m sure I’ve said this before, but I have a real thing for stories about Taylor’s shotgun wedding. Somehow, Road to Eden remained under my radar for a long time, but after stumbling upon it, I decided to see why it’s one story that I’ve heard mentioned over and over.
Road to Eden, unlike just about any other story I can think of about this period in Taylor’s life, is actually told from Taylor’s point of view. He’s a little immature, but in a way that’s sympathetic, and his back and forth about his own feelings is more than understandable. He’s so immature, almost innocent, that he doesn’t even seem to realize at first that he’s begun an affair with DeLorean, the girl he met in the bookstore.
Taylor’s naivety makes for a story full of back and forth, but it never turns into the huge angst fest that so many similar stories are. Aside from a few slips in tense and the lack of scene breaks, I think Ashley really nails Taylor’s immature but almost endearing personality. Unfortunately, the version of Road to Eden that is still available online is an unfinished version; a finished version and even a sequel did once exist, but those have been lost in the ether. This version stops at a huge cliffhanger that hints at more angst to come, and I’m almost okay with not getting to read all that angst.
