Is It Too Late? has a really unique, Freaky Friday sort of premise. Taylor drinks himself into a dream world where he didn’t choose music over his girlfriend. There’s just so much fun to be had with a premise like that, and Becca does manage to cram a lot of it into such a short story.
Because it is so short, there’s a lot of exposition to get through to explain how Taylor ended up where he is when the story begins. Most of it blends well enough into the narration, although some of it — like his ‘daughter’ asking him to look at the family photo album — feels somewhat shoehorned in.
Becca manages to cram a lot into this story, and while a few of the chapters are almost too sappy and sweet for me, I couldn’t really see them happening any other way. The way she glosses over the slightly scifi premise and keeps the story realistic works really well. I wouldn’t have minded the last few chapters being a bit longer to increase the emotional impact even more, but otherwise (occasional grammatical errors aside), Is It Too Late? isn’t a bad story at all.
