I’m immediately inclined not to be impressed by stories that use Hanson songs as titles because it just feels like relying on the lowest common denominator. It’s interesting to see that making such a comeback at this point in hanfic, as well as seeing how many stories (out of necessity, I suppose) seem to be focused on one of the guys having an affair. Because I do like a little forbidden romance, I’m willing to give Lost Without You a chance.
It’s difficult to build much of an interesting premise to a story about an affair, but Sarah does a good job. Scarlett has an interesting backstory, as does Zac (although he’s just a minor character), and the chemistry between Scarlett and Taylor is clear. Those strengths stand out even amid some fairly sloppy editing.
Another of Sarah’s strengths is that she never quite lets the story delve into overdramatics, although a lot happens in its forty eight chapters — which are quite short, by the way. At times, the drama is almost cut too short, which is a shame, because there are some great twists and turns that I would love to see even more of. Although Lost Without You had some cheesy moments and definitely could use an editor, there were just enough dramatics (and steamy sexy scenes!) to keep me interested, even though I’m not sure it’s going to be added to my list of favorites.
