The funny thing about series is that even if you don’t really like the stories, by the time you’re two stories in, you’re kind of invested anyway. I would need both hands to count all the things that annoyed me in the first two stories, but I’m actually interested to see how Wouldn’t You Prefer A Maiden Fair? plays out.
Immediately, I’m struck by all the mentions of food, weight (of course Dextera is overweight too) and Taylor’s weirdness about hearing Ana’s Song. I can see where this — and the snobby, model-like opening act — is going, but like anything Kate writes, it’s clear that it’s going to take a long time to get there.
When it does, it doesn’t go exactly where I was expecting. I won’t say which couple ends up together, because it takes until the very last chapters for it to all work out, but suffice it to say, it wasn’t the one I had found myself rooting for. Although Wouldn’t You Prefer A Maiden Fair? is easily the best of the three stories, the ending was less than satisfying. But isn’t it always that way with love triangles?
