Mona wastes absolutely no time getting this story moving. In the very first chapter of Never Judge a Book By Its Cover, we see the end of Taylor’s relationship. Within the next few chapters, he’s already had what we’ll call an encounter with another woman. The chapters move quickly, especially given how short they are, but I’m curious to see how the title ties into the plot.
The plot, as you might have guessed, revolves around Taylor misjudging Samantha, who he assumes to be a bit (okay, a lot) slutty just based on her looks. Of course, she isn’t, because that would be too predictable, and we all love to see Taylor look like a fool, don’t we? Taylor, too, is assumed to be things he’s not based on his rockstar reputation, and those assumptions are the basis for the bond he and Samantha form.
The chapters remain quite short which makes it a little difficult to get very engaged in the plot or the characters. Even though there’s a little drama lurking below the surface, the story never really verges on anything angsty, instead staying somewhere between romance and erotica. The writing is fairly strong, with just a few odd turns of phrase and unusual idioms that can be attributed to English not being Mona’s first language. I wouldn’t have minded a few longer chapters, because the story was just a bit too short for me to form a full impression of it. Overall, though, Never Judge A Book By Its Cover is a good, if brief, read.
