Isaac-centric stories are few and far between, and I’ll admit that I’m not his biggest fan. He’s a hard one to write, making him often hard to read about as well. Nat’s one writer I can always count on to turn a plot I think I won’t like into something I enjoy, though, and Fallon is no different.
By the end of the first chapter, Nat has perfectly established the situation and the characters. Even the brief glimpse of Isaac that we get during the phone call with Julianne reveals that he’s not the bad guy she seems to think he is. The rest of the characters, from the headstrong Julianne to the skeptical Taylor, are equally well fleshed out.
What I find most refreshing about Fallon is that despite the whole baby thing, it really isn’t all that much of a romance. Julianne and Isaac waste no time acknowledging that they aren’t in love, and that gets underscored constantly by the way they interact with each other. Of course, things can and do change.
What Nat excels at is developing her characters and the worlds they live in. I may not always be the biggest fan of romcoms, but Nat’s stories are so much more than that. Fallon, in particular, is quite different. Sadly, the story is unfinished, but it ends on a nice positive note so that I almost don’t even mind the lack of resolution.
