Kaylin’s writing comes highly recommended, and from the first chapter I can understand why. She has a slightly detached, but wonderfully sarcastic, style that I really, really enjoy. Although there are a few weak moments, she pulls off that style better than a lot of young writers.
She Is Me wastes no time getting started, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Although the chapters are fairly short, Kaylin packs a lot into them. It’s not a romance, like a lot of early hanfics were, but there is plenty of drama. It isn’t the best rendering of an emotionally damaged girl in an abusive relationship that I’ve read, but it’s far from the worst. As the title implies, the main character Madison bears a few similarities to Jessica Hanson, who she accidentally hits with her car early in the story.
It’s a very different sort of premise, and I really appreciate that. I’m not surprised at all when the romance plot begins, but at least it was with Isaac — bonus points for that. Still, it overshadows the rest of the plot a bit, and everything gets tied up a little too neatly at the end. Kaylin had a decent premise here, and her writing is fairly strong, so I can’t fault her too much for sticking to her idea and not dragging the story out forever. For what I assume to be the work of a young author, She Is Me is a solid enough story.
