Even though the first story in this series didn’t totally win me over, I am impressed by the effort Karen has put into building her world and the characters that populate it. Think of Laura begins four years after the end of Chances Are, and I am curious to see what has changed in the characters’ lives in that time.
From the beginning, Think of Laura suffers from some of the same problems as Chances Are. The chapters are short and leave out a lot of details, while also smacking me over the head with some pretty blunt foreshadowing. I’m still clueless as to what happened in the years between the two stories between Taylor and Laura; all I know is that something big happened and Karen isn’t going to reveal it yet. I like secrets, but this is ridiculous.
When that secret is finally revealed, it’s a little different than I expected. The child Laura has kept hidden from Taylor isn’t his — a refreshing change from so many other stories I’ve read and one that creates a different set of problems for their relationship. Taylor’s reaction is annoying immature, but not unbelievable. The writing, period, is rather immature, which doesn’t suit this story as well as it did Chances Are, where the characters were mostly younger than they are in this one.
Unlike Chances Are, though, this story doesn’t jump around in time (aside from a few flashbacks), so it’s a little easier to connect to the characters and follow their story. I also think I see a hint of the beginning of Zac’s story, which comes next in the series. If I’m right, I’m actually looking forward to it.
