We all know that story. You know, that story. The one that spawned an entire fandom unto itself and Accidentally In Love appears to be one of the many “Moffson” stories that appeared in its wake, but one that stands on its own with a completely (but also unfinished) seperate plot.
Okay, maybe the plot isn’t that different. It all begins in a hotel, where the two bands just happen to be staying. It quickly (and I do mean quickly) moves on to a musical festival where, you guessed it, both bands are playing. The scenes are abrupt and a bit mixed up, since Angel switches back and forth between which boy is narrating every few paragraphs, blending together Moffatt-only scenes and Hanson-only scenes so that I’m left scrolling back up to see where the last scene left off. Even if the chapters were a bit longer and covered a bit more ground, these breakneck scene changes would be just as dizzying.
What does set Accidentally In Love apart is the fact that it isn’t entirely a “Scottay” story. It also doesn’t feature such innocent characters or even much in the way of love. The characters, which are very close to caricatures, don’t feel any real emotions — at least none I can connect with — until several chapters into the story, and a lot of their inner monologues just leave me rolling my eyes. Just before Angel abruptly abandoned the story, she began to hint at deeper emotions and problems of the lovely, angsty type that plagued that era of moffic perhaps even more than hanfic. I would have liked to see these issues resolved, especially if it lead to the characters being more fully fleshed out by the story’s end.
