If I thought Pages of Your Diary was long, it’s nothing compared to its sequel, Here We Go Round Again. I can’t even imagine being able to sustain a plot for so many chapters, but I hope that Sammy is able to.
The chapters here vary a lot in length, from as short as the first story’s chapters to quite long, but none of them cover a lot of ground — or a lot of time. Single days sometimes stretch out for close to ten chapters! There’s still tons of drama to be seen, and sometimes a little too much for my tastes. The characters are young, so it’s not surprising that there’s a lot of juvenile misbehavior and miscommunication behind a lot of the drama. But it’s their young age that makes a lot of the sexual content hard for even an admitted smut fan like myself to swallow — especially when Zac and Taylor are so incredibly indiscreet.
I’ve noticed that several times in her authors notes, Sammy assures her readers that the story is nearly over. These assurances start at roughly the halfway point of the story! Had I been reading it as it was written, I might have believed her. As it is, I just have to be amazed at how much of the story seems to have been unplanned. I know stories can sometimes get away from their authors and go off in unexpected directions, but I’m just not so sure about any unexpected directions that add a hundred chapters to a story.
There are some plot elements I like here, and it still gets me right in the nostalgia, but I think Sammy could have told the same story more concisely. I’m still interested to see what a third story, especially from Taylor’s point of view, might bring, even though I’m not crazy about the fact that Sammy started incorporating chapters from Taylor’s point of view near the end of Here We Go Round Again. But most of all, I really hope Zac and Taylor have learned to be a little more discreet and actually communicate with each other!
