November 2016 Author: Katie

The name Katie might sound familiar, for a couple reasons. But the main one should be because she was just featured here not too long ago for her first published hanfic.

You can read that fic, Mad World, on AO3 or Wattpad, and keep an eye out for more from her soon. But first, check out her interview with me.

Why did you start writing hanfic? How long have you been writing?

Hanfic was the first fanfiction I ever read or knew existed. For that reason, this fandom has always been close to my heart. After reading many stories, I decided I wanted to write my own. I started writing hanfic in 1999, however it was written the old fashioned way – with pen and paper. I still have some of my handwritten stories filed away somewhere! After writing many unfinished and scrapped works over the years, I finally decided to share a piece with others. Mad World was an idea I could stick with that I felt would interest other readers, while also keeping my own attention over the long term.

Do you write other fiction and/or fanfic as well? If so, what genres/fandoms/etc?

I used to wite Angel (the spinoff to Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Bones fanfiction. I also have 3 original fiction stories currently in my saved files to be published someday.

What are your favorite hanfic stories and authors?

“Sonny Get Your Gun” by Jemgrrl
“Sweetest Downfall series” by Bethany
“Rubicon” by hudson_coltrane
“Something to Believe In” by Chaosintoart21
“You Are a Drug and it is Quick” by zhangirl22
“Catapult” by Ella

The more realistic and well-characterized a story is, the more I like it!

What is your writing process like?

Exactly this:

Where do your ideas and inspiration come from?

Music lyrics, movies, people watching, books, friends, and sometimes random ideas that come out of left field. I have a new idea currently in the works that will be Zac-centric, romance genre, and will hopefully have the first chapter out in November! It will be an AU-Fic where Zac is head of the secret service and falls for the president’s daughter.

Which stories are you most proud of having written?

Honestly, I have to say this one, as it’s my only shared story. Although I’ve written others, I just didn’t feel they made the cut.

Favorite songs to listen to while you write or which inspire your writing?

A band called Hammock, which is mostly lyric-free with lots of atmospheric sounds. Helen Jane Long, who is a pianist and also lyric-free. I tend to do better when there aren’t any words to distract me. Occasionally I will write to music with lyrics if it’s mellow enough. Once I’ve developed a story, if I hear a song that I think fits in, I will incorporate it into a soundtrack. I currently have one in the works for Mad World.

Thank you, Katie, for being the November spotlight! I’m really intrigued by your new fic, and I couldn’t agree more about the writing process.
