Once again, I get to feature a (relatively) new author! You may recognize KT’s name; she’s the newest edition to my own Like Ashes Series, which is a massive co-written project that I couldn’t be more excited about.
She also has a few fics of her own out there, including If Tomorrow Never Comes and Lost Without Each Other. You can read those on her AO3 account.
Read on to learn a bit more about my newest co-author!
Why did you start writing hanfic? How long have you been writing?
I have this problem where once I read something, I have to try writing it. My best friend always jokes about it (“You can’t just casually read anything”). So when I started reading Hanfic as a teenager, I had to try my hand at it. I’m fairly new to posting my fics publicly. When I was younger I would just share them with my friends via email or instant messenger, but I’m having fun posting my stuff lately. So since I was about 16 I’ve been turning to fic whenever I have writer’s block, or if I just have a story in my head that won’t leave me alone.
Do you write other fiction and/or fanfic as well? If so, what genres/fandoms/etc?
Yes! I mostly write Spring Awakening fic. SA is a musical that was on Broadway from 2006-2009 (and recently had a revival). It is my favorite thing in this world, and I have seen it an obscene amount of times (think triple digits, people) and I’ve also been IN three different productions of it. Needless to say, I know the source material VERY well, which makes writing the fic VERY easy.
What are your favorite hanfic stories and authors?
The first fic I EVER read (hanfic or otherwise) was Catapult, so it holds a very special place in my heart. I’ve been meaning to reread it for a while since it’s been years since the last time I read it. I also love Gravity (Bethany), The Kindred Series (Aimster), and the incomparable Devil Angel (Aspen).
What is your writing process like?
Usually, once inspiration strikes, it pours out of me. I have an obsessive personality, and once I have an idea, I have to see it through as quickly as possible. So usually my process is a few days of writing constantly and then weeks of…not much. Until another idea takes up residence in my brain.
Where do your ideas and inspiration come from?
I work in theatre professionally, so in a way it’s my job to create fanfiction. What I mean to say is, when I’m playing a character, I create an entire life for them that extends beyond the stage. Because I’ve been in that industry since I was five, that’s just the way my brain works. Fanfiction is so cool because (so much like acting) we are given these already existing characters with given circumstances for which we can create a whole slew of problems and solutions. I also draw from my own life. I’m a musician, and that seems to shine through in my writing pretty blatantly. Write what you know, I guess.
Which stories are you most proud of having written?
My fic that I recently posted on AO3, “Lost Without Each Other.” It was one of those stories that just wouldn’t leave me alone until I got it all written down, and in the end, I was extremely happy with how it turned out.
Favorite songs to listen to while you write or which inspire your writing?
Besides the obvious (Hanson), I listen to a lot of Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. They inspire me as a songwriter, and they have a way with words that always makes me want to put pen to paper (whether it be for a song, an original work, or a fic)!
Thanks, KT, for being the March spotlight! I look forward to working more and more with you 🙂
