November 2011 Author: Misery

Okay, I promise I am back for good now! No more hiatuses or delayed posting of the spotlights.

For November, the spotlight is on Misery, the owner of HansonFanFiction.com. You can visit her site to read lots of great fiction, including her own. It’s a great resource that she’s providing for the hanfic community.

ETA: As of February 2012, HansonFanFiction.com has been closed.

Why did you start writing hanfic? How long have you been writing?
Honestly, I started writing because one of my favorite authors said I should give it a try. I gave it a shot in 2005, wrote a few chapters of a story, then scrapped it because I got a better idea from it. My first story ended up being total crap, though I’m still posting it on HFF for shits and giggles. I do still have those first few chapters that I’d ever written lingering in my email somewhere.

I asked Chelsi this question too. You write Tokio Hotel fic. How is that different from hanfic?
Oh, I could go on for ages, lol. Tokio Hotel is a German band. It’s an entirely different world from what I know due to the language and cultural differences. Their music is completely different, be it the genre or the ‘message’, the two bands are nothing alike. Honestly, I can relate to them on a better level than I can Hanson because I find myself more easily able to identify with four small town boys from the hole in the wall village of Magdeburg than three religious and family oriented brothers from Oklahoma.

While Hanson fans have Hancest, which can be a pairing of any two brothers, or more, TH fans have Twincest, which is the pairing of identical twins Bill and Tom. Twincest is without a doubt the largest fiction genre in the TH fandom. It’s different writing about a relationship between twin brothers, even non-incestual, than typical brothers because of the strong inner bond that twins are known to share. Adding romance and taboo love to that twin bond makes for some /very/ heartfelt writing and reading. It can be written as one soul split into two bodies, destined to be together forever, or something as simple as a very unique connection. This alone can spur into mythical genres as well, from chimera to forbidden love that spurs across multiple universes just to exist. I find it fascinating.

Also, through Tokio Hotel, I’ve discovered other musicians that tie into their world. Just like Hanson has Michelle Branch (and whomever else would be considered a staple in Hanfic), Tokio Hotel has Bushido, Chakuza, Fluer, Kay One, and Samy Deluxe (who are all German rappers who share a past with Tokio Hotel) as well as a slew of body guards, managers, make up artists, models, friends, and family who are all staples within the fandom.

As I said, it’s an entirely different world. It really is like comparing apples and oranges. 😀

What are your favorite hanfic stories and authors?
Oh wow, it’s been so long since I’ve had to think of these…

Diosa – Hair Like Fire/The You In You

Ashley – Avery

Akimbie – On My Own

Ella – Catapult

Aspen – Devil Angel

Krystal – Krystal is actually the girl who talked me into writing. I just checked to link to her fiction from her site, Enlighten Me, but it’s not working. ;__; I don’t remember what her stories were called off hand, but it was a vampire trilogy and it was by far my FAVORITE Hanfic of ALL time.

What is your writing process like?
I don’t really think I have a ‘process’ to my writing. I tend to get what I think is a great idea, and then I’ll just start writing it without planning anything out. I’ve never taken writing classes, and this possibly would explain why I’ve never actually finished anything I’ve started. ^^

Where do your ideas and inspiration come from?
Music, definitely. I can hear a song a million times, then the next time I hear it, suddenly I can find a story within the lyrics and create an entire universe from that alone. Actually writing it out is a lot different, though.

Which stories are you most proud of having written?
I think if I were to give it a chance and rewrite it now, considering how much better my writing has gotten over the years, I think it would be safe to say that ‘Bid My Blood To Run’ would be something I could find myself being proud of. However, I think ‘A Song To Say Goodbye…’ would be the story I’m most proud of.

Favorite songs to listen to while you write or which inspire your writing?
I tend to listen to the song in which the story was inspired by. ‘Bid My Blood To Run’ is from Bring Me To Life by Evanescence, and ‘A Song To Say Goodbye…’ is from the same titled song by Placebo. I will literally just sit there with the songs on repeat for hours while I write.

Thank you, Misery, for being the November spotlight. I hope you continue to find success with HansonFanFiction.com and that you can find a way to keep it online.
