Trick or Treat, give me something good to read!

Trick or Treat, give me something good to read!

You guys may or may not know this, but Halloween is kind of my favorite holiday. I thought it would be a perfect time to give you guys a little treat, in the form of a themed recs list. I did a few of these way back in the beginning of the domain, but those lists have been lost. So let’s just pretend this is the first!

And of course, since it’s Halloween, the list is spooky, ghoulish and full of all sorts of creepy crawlies. Of course, the Yellow Walkie Talkie was a good source for that sort of story back in the day, but few of those links still work. I’ve tried to find some newer, or at least still active, links to some of all the awesome Halloweeny hanfic stories out there. And here they are, below the jump.

Blank Page Awards & Other Projects

Blank Page Awards & Other Projects

Forgot to post this blog yesterday to coincide with the awards ending. It was a long day. But here it is now!

This year’s round of the Blank Page Awards was incredible! There were roughly four billion voters — okay, okay, just 116. Still insane! To the best of knowledge, that makes these awards the biggest and most successful since 2006. It’s so great to see hanfic booming again! It makes me want to see even more awards and do even more fun little projects for you guys.

So, in that vein, I want to start doing something I had planned to do way back when this site began. I attempted it, but then abandoned it. What is it? I wanted to post recs lists here on the blog every now and then. I’ll be starting that in just a few days, with some rather timely recs – Halloween themed! Dark, sometimes scary stories have always been popular in hanfic, and Halloween is a good time to showcase some of those stories. Now that the awards are over, I can get a bit caught up on my reading and get these recs ready.

Look for my Halloween recs in a few days, then the November spotlights! 🙂

Reviews and a little promo.

Reviews and a little promo.

This month’s reviews feel like they’ve taken forever, but they really haven’t. They’re finally here, though, and they are as follows:

You’ll notice that I sneaked in two Anthem era reviews, both of stories that weren’t on the list I posted last month. It just so happened that they were both finished recently, and I was already reading them, so I decided to get ahead a bit and double up.

There’s also a bonus review, from Elizabeth, of Because It Plays My Favorite Song. You can read that on the Shout It Out era page, and of course, you’re always welcome to submit your own reviews. Next month I’ll be reviewing:

With the reviews out of the way, I want to drop a little promo in here. As some of you may know, the Blank Page Awards are underway now. Voting just started, and I would really like to encourage everyone to head over there and vote for their faves. I’d love it, of course, if you’d vote for me, but I’ll happy to receive any votes!

And on time for once! Try not to die of shock, guys. This month’s spotlights are:

  • Author: Madden
  • Story: Mistakes We Knew We Were Making by Calla
  • Website: Blank Page Awards
  • You’ll notice that the website is one of my own. Nominations are still open and will continue for the next week, so if you haven’t sent any in yet (or even if you have but you want to give some more stories some love), click that link above and go do it now.

Blank Page Awards!

Blank Page Awards!

I should have tacked this onto my post yesterday, but it wasn’t quite ready to go when I posted about the reviews. So here it is now!

Last spring I ran the first round of the Blank Page Awards. The idea was to do some different categories than I usually saw in awards in the hopes of letting some different, maybe lesser known stories have a chance to win. It worked fairly well, although there were a lot of ties. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it again, but the recent boom in hanfic convinced me. With so many new authors and stories around, I think it’s just time for some awards.

You can visit the site to see the rules, categories and schedule. Nominations begin in two weeks, so you’ve got time to pick the stories you want to nominate — or squeeze out a few more chapters of your own story!
