February updates

February updates

Well, you might have noticed all my tweets lately about how I’ve been changing the site’s layout. I’m finally done with it — I hope. I keep finding little things to tweak, but mostly I’m really happy with how this layout looks and I plan to keep it (with or without any more little changes) for the rest of the year.

As for other updates, I’ve got the monthly spotlights up on time this month. The featured author is Nat, who has contributed some awesome articles to the site and helped with my still-not-posted “Intro to Hanfic” page. Website of the month is Becca’s Hanfic Calendar and story of the month is SNAFU by Ali, which I think you’ll find to be very helpful and very unique, respectfully. I think you guys will be very pleased with this month’s spotlights.

That’s basically all I have in the works right now, but I did want to remind you guys that I will be starting up the third round of Thieves and Liars next month. The plan is to launch the nominations in mid-March, but I don’t have the schedule set in stone yet. As soon as I do, I will post about it here as well as tweet about it so that you guys can be as ready for the new round as I am.

Until then, I hope you guys enjoy these little updates to the site.

Happy new year!

Happy new year!

A new year has begun. This year marks a full decade that I’ve been in some way participating in the Hanson fandom online. I stepped into the fandom in the fall of 2000, and began making my own websites and writing my own fan fiction in early 2001 with the brand new computer I received for Christmas.

Oh, how times have changed.

This year is already shaping up to be a big one, with lots of challenges and other fun stuff to keep people busy writing and reading. Here’s a portion of my resolutions/to do list for the coming year just to give you guys an idea of what I’m working on.

-get better at putting up my monthly spotlights on time
-finish all challenges I enter
-finish writing and post all of Cesura and Love and Other Socially Acceptable Emotions
-try to update all of my WIPs at least once a month
-begin posting Skin and Bone, Gravity and What Didn’t Happen
-only do a second round of Boomerang if I can find some co-mods to help
-make a new layout for this site and keep it for the rest of the year
-find a new and better way to conduct the voting forms for Thieves and Liars and run a spring round of it
-post more entries to this blog to keep you guys interested in what’s going on in my little hanfic world
-try to find some new hostees for the site (hint hint, visitors!)

Those are just a few of the things I have on my plate right now. I know more stories and ideas will come to me as the year goes on. How will I find the time to do it all? I don’t know. But if ten years of dedication to this band means anything, then I know I’m going to keep on trucking.

Looking for your input. Yes, you!

Looking for your input. Yes, you!

See that “Intro to Hanfic” link over there on the right? See how it says it’s coming soon? Well, it’s been coming soon for quite a while now because it’s a huge, massive undertaking that I’m not sure I can really do on my own.

But damn it, I’m going to try.

However, I’d really love to have some input from my visitors and readers. There are two things I need from you guys to help me complete the page. You can reply here in a comment or send me an email, whichever you’re more comfortable with.

1. What would you consider the most important hanfics of all time? The ones that were influential and groundbreaking, and the ones that you just really really enjoyed. I’m looking to list stories from 1997 to the present, in roughly six “eras.” If you know when a story was originally published, that would be a huge help.

2. What are some of your memories of hanfic throughout the years? Where and how did you find hanfic to read? What trends and attitudes do you remember? How have things changed over time? I could rephrase these questions a dozen more ways, but I think you get the idea.

Anyone who replies will get a lovely thank you on the page once it is finished. I really, really appreciate everyone who helps me to fill in the gaps in my own knowledge of hanfic and make this page as informative as possible. In fact, I’d like to go ahead and thank Aeryn, Rebekah and Misty for contributing to the list of stories. And a thanks in advance to everyone who replies to this plea for help.

Snowed in (and I don’t mean the album!) :D

Snowed in (and I don’t mean the album!) :D

I’ve spent the last four days watching the snow pile up here. It’s really gotten me in the Christmas spirit, but it’s also leading to some serious boredom. I haven’t left my house since Friday evening!

The good news for you guys, is that I’ve had tons of time to explore the internet and dig up more sites for the directory. I’ve added I’m-not-sure-how-many-but-a-lot of sites, bringing the total count up to 1738! If I keep this up, it could reach 2000 sites before the year is over. How amazing is that?

I’d also like to note that I’ve added the first Finnish site to the directory, as well as two Québécois sites. So don’t be confused if you see the Canadian flag on two of the sites and not on all the other Canadian ones; I just wasn’t sure how else to denote the language without having people assume that they were from France. Maybe using flags wasn’t such a great idea after all? But they look so cute…

All of this web surfing has me noticing just how few awards we have these days. Awards were handed out like candy back in the day! Now, of course, we are less active now. But I think we could still do with a few more awards. I won’t be running Thieves and Liars again until March/April, so someone else needs to pick up my slack before then! Who wants to do it? Anyone?

Now that I’ve given you guys a little update, I think some hot tea and the other sort of “Snowed In” is in order…

A very merry (and early!) Christmas

A very merry (and early!) Christmas

You know what December means? It means I’ve had this website for a year. Well, in two weeks that will be true, at least. And what that means is that I want to do some really special stuff for you guys to celebrate both the holiday and the anniversary.

The first of those things is that in addition to updating the monthly spotlights, as I do every month, I’ve created a little award for everyone who has been spotlighted in the past. Right now those awards are just stuck in a directory that you can access here, but I may create a little page to hold them all at some point in the future.

December’s spotlights, in case you don’t feel like going directly to the page to check them out, are as follows:

  • Author: Veronica, whose fic you can read here on LiveJournal
  • Website: Christmas Time, the advent calendar run by Becca
  • Story: Breaktown Records by Renee P.
  • My second little holiday surprise for you guys is a huge overhaul to the directory. Or, to be more accurate, the completion of the overhaul that has been in progress for several weeks now. I’ve separated the alphabetical listings into four pages rather than three, so less scrolling. And I’ve recounted all the sites so that the totals are now accurate. And, as always, I’ve added several new sites. With that comes an updated count of foreign sites, because that little statistic just fascinates me.

Out of a total of 1462 sites, the foreign language sites are as follows:

  • Brazil — 42
  • Chile — 9
  • Costa Rica — 1
  • Czech Republic — 1
  • France — 1
  • Germany — 4
  • Indonesia — 1
  • Italy — 1
  • Mexico – 6
  • Peru — 1
  • Poland — 1
  • Puerto Rico — 1
  • Spain — 2
  • Isn’t that cool? I’m always amazed to find more Hanson sites from around the world.

More Christmas surprises, some of which I haven’t even though of yet, to come!
